How to fix “Authentication failed” problem when setting up Hotmail/Live ActiveSync on Android ?

It seems pretty straightforward to configure Exchange ActiveSync for Hotmail/Live on your Android device. But, if you keep getting invalid password errors, even though you’re sure the username & password are correct, the 2-step verification you’ve turned on for that particular account could be the reason.

In that case, follow the steps below to create an app password, and use this password when configuring ActiveSync for Hotmail/Live on your Android devices:

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Next, click Security Info and follow by Create a new app password.

  3. A new app password will be generated on your screen.
  4. Now, use this password when you’re setting up Hotmail/Live ActiveSync on your Android device.
