How to Configure Lumia 920 for Gmail IMAP and POP3 Access ?

You can configure to either use POP3 (Post Office Protocol) or IMAP (Internet Messaged Access Protocol) protocols to download mails from Gmail’s servers onto your Lumia 920.

There are many differences between these two. But the main difference is that IMAP always syncs with the Gmail’s server so that any changes you make on your phone will instantly appear in web-based Gmail.

On the other hand, in POP setup, your email client (on your phone) and Gmail server are not synced. That means whatever changes you make on your phone, will not be reflected on your web-based Gmail.

While Google recommends using IMAP, it’s up to you to choose the one that’s better to meet your needs.

Below are the steps to configure your Lumia 920 for Gmail POP3 and IMAP access.

Note: Before configuring your email client, you need to enable POP3 and IMAP forwarding on your Gmail.

iii. Configure Lumia 920 for Gmail’s ‘recent mode’ access.

Well, you might wonder what’s recent mode. Below is a clear explanation from Google

If you’re accessing Gmail on multiple clients through POP, Gmail’s ‘recent mode’ makes sure that all messages are made available to each client, rather than only to the first client to access new mail.

Recent mode fetches the last 30 days of mail, regardless of whether it’s been sent to another POP1 client already. – Source Google.

Good news! Your Windows Phone 8 email client supports Gmail’s ‘recent mode’. The steps to configure this feature are similar to option ii, except in the username field, you need to enter “recent:your username@gmail.com”
