How to Assign Different Ringtones for Each Contact or Group in Galaxy S3 ?

One of the best ways to differentiate between callers is to assign them with different ringtones.

In Galaxy S3, you have the flexibility to set a custom ringtone for each contact or each contact group. And the individual setting always supersedes the group setting.

Assigning Ringtones for Each Contact

  1. On your phone, go to Contacts.
  2. On the contact list, tap the contact you wish to assign a custom ringtone.
  3. Scroll down to the Ringtones section, and tap the right arrow button.
    Phone Detail View
  4. Now, you will see a pop-up window with 3 options: Default, Ringtones, Go to My files. For this tutorial, I will select the Ringtones option.
Default – This option uses the ringtone that has set in Settings > Sound > Device ringtone.

Ringtones – This option offers you a list of pre-loaded ringtones and ringtones found in the ringtones folder.

Go to My Files – This option lets you browse the internal phone storage or external SD card storage for a ringtone file.
    Pop up Option Menu

  5. Then, select a ringtone and click OK.

Assigning Ringtones for Each Contact Group

  1. On your phone, go to Contacts.
  2. Tap the Groups option on top of the screen.
    Groups Tab
  3. Tap and hold the group name you wish to change the ringtone.
  4. Then, you will see a pop-up menu, select Edit group.
    Edit Group Option
  5. Tap the Group ringtone.
    Edit Group
  6. Now, you will see a pop-up menu with 3 options: Default, Ringtones, Go to My files. For this tutorial, I will select the Ringtones option.
    Pop Up Option Menu
  7. Then, select a ringtone and click OK.

Trying to put individual ringtones to each of my contacts…but following above not possible as I do not get the available fields. Is this because my contact are saved to the simcard and not the phone. If so how do I change this?

    • Ethan says:

You can transfer the contact from SIM card to your Gmail account by going to Contacts Settings > Import/Export > Import from SIM card > select Google

I did as you said and everything seemed to work and even the right “song” is selected but just the default works. Is there something I am doing wrong?

I have the same problem. Wondering if to use groups all contacts have to be duplicated to phone from sim card and assigned a special group. Hence you would have under groups “general contacts” “family” “friends” etc. I haven’t tried it as there are so many contacts – and I could be wrong.
