How to Upgrade Firmware Over The Air on Samsung Galaxy S3?

(This is part of the My Quick Start Guide for Samsung Galaxy S3 Series.)

Always make sure your software is up to date is pretty much a standard advice from any phone makers.

Samsung is no different, constantly tracks down and fixes bugs, and then releases new firmware to improve stability.

This firmware can be easily installed to your phone using either the Samsung Kies (a desktop software) or with firmware over-the-air (FOTA) service.

And since I’ve done a firmware upgrade with FOTA service on my S3 recently, I thought of sharing these simple steps here.

But before you start, below are the basic requirements you should take note.

  • Stable network status (3G or Wi-Fi)
  • Enough battery capacity (More than 50%)
  • Enough memory space (At least 100MB in USB storage)
  • PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE the battery during upgrade

To upgrade firmware with FOTA service.

1. On your phone, go to Settings > About device > Software update.

2. Tap the Update to check for firmware updates. If new firmware is available, it will automatically start downloading.

Software Update

3. Once download is completed, you can either choose to install now or later.

4. If you tap Later, you will be prompted with 3 options of Reminder interval.

Later Install Optionreminder_interval

5. If you tap Install, the phone will be reloaded and start the firmware installation.
